A good place to start: Trash bags + Ziplocs
Listen, I’m not perfect. I still use plastic products in my home. But I’m making the effort and have made a lot of changes. It makes me feel good everyday to use my bars of soap instead of pumping a plastic bottle. I’m setting an example for my daughter when I explain to her why we’re using a moisturizer bar after her bath now instead of a bottle of lotion. She’s 3 and she already knows how to recycle and that plastic is bad for the earth. I’m doing what I can – be it imperfectly – in the hopes that her generation will do it better. That’s all we can do, really. It’s not about perfection. Focus on the easy feel-good changes you can make. They don’t even have to be something new. It could be repurposing tissue paper for gifts & packages. It could be using a dish towel more often than paper towels. It could be buying in bulk. It could be using a bar of soap and a rag in the shower instead of multiple different bottles of soaps and loofas. It could be stitching a torn piece of clothes. It could be saying, “No, thank you,” to a disposable plastic cup, lid and straw, and opting for just a paper cup. For me, using a bar of soap, a reusable water bottle, and compostable trash bags and ziplocs give me all the feels and make me feel like I’m doing good. I may do ten other things not good for the planet today, but at least I did a few good things. And that’s something.
If you’re not sure where to start, compostable trash bags and ziplocs are a really easy change that can make a huge difference with your plastic footprint. If you’re not sure what compostable means, I’ll explain. Basically there are 3 levels: recyclable, biodegradable and compostable. Recyclable isn’t good for much these days, since China and a number of the other countries we were sending our recycled goods to are now rejecting them, only for them to be sent back to us in a sick game of recycle limbo that ends in the ocean. Biodegradable means that something will break down in nature eventually. But all things break down in nature eventually, even plastic. But it takes plastic a really long time to break down (about 400-1000 years) and it breaks down into toxic microplastics that purportedly cause cancer as we ingest them on the daily. Then there’s compostable. Compostable means that something is organic and breaks down into beneficial matter for the environment, such as fertilizer. A lot of products list themselves as compostable, but the true test is whether something is verified compostable by BPI, the Biodegradable Products Institute. All the products I recommend as compostable are always verified by BPI.
